review 1: I was given an advance copy of this book for my honest opinion. Hooley dooley, don't expect an early night once you pick up this book. The main character Sean is not all that likeable; flawed does not cut it with him. He's a bully, a drunk and an all round nasty guy but when he by chance sees another man suicide under mysterious circumstances the would be sleuth takes it upon himself to investigate. That's when things start to get really interesting. Now I'm not going to give you spoilers here, but this book picks up pace really quickly and keeps twisting and turning to keep you guessing all the way to the end. Oh and as for our Sean, I think I might just like him now. Great story.
review 2: I was nervous to read this book because I know the author and his fam... moreily...I was worried how I would respond if I didn't like this book. Thankfully, curiosity won out. I REALLY enjoyed this first book from John. As Lori commented, in the beginning, I acknowledged that I knew the author and also being a Colorado native, I found myself trying identify many of the area descriptions, i.e. Lakeland is somewhat like Loveland (in name only)...but after awhile, I completely forgot that I know John and just got lost in the story. At the start, I disliked Sean Coleman and questioned how he would redeem himself by the end, but strangely, he became endearing and I found myself rooting for him. The best books, in my opinion, are the ones that you want to keep returning to, even AFTER you have finished them...From a Dead Sleep is definitely one of those books. Looking forward to a sequel!! less
