review 1: One of several Torchwood novels, this one is is actually by Jack Harkness himself, John Barrowman. It's set after Miracle Day, so the Torchwood crew is sadly reduced to Jack, Gwen, Rhys, and a few brief apperances by Rex Mathieson of the CIA. What does a really bizarre experience Jack had in the 1930's have to do with women going crazy all over the world now, as well as undersea phenomena and the possible end of the world? And how does an apparent outbreak of synesthesia tie in? This is a mostly Jack centered novel, understandable on two fronts. Barrwoman wrote it, and Jack's one of the few survivors. There are passing references to the Doctor as well as Sarah Jane, which I really liked. And, of course, mentions of the dead Torchwood people we've lost. While I mostly... more enjoyed it, there were a few things that bothered me. There was some coincidental damage from earthquakes that prevented the characters getting to information they needed, and the destruction of one of the last Torchwood artefacts, which made me sad. There were a few action scenes I wasn't entirely clear on what exactly happened. Jack seems to be adept at using his belt as a weapon and a restraint, and I'm not sure where this came from. Also, I've a disturbing rumor to report to Torchwood fans. At a panel at DragonCon this year, it was reported that Barrowman approached the BBC about doing another Torchwood novel. They told him, "Torchwood is dead." I really hope that's not the case. Overall it was enjoyable. Recommended to fans of Torchwood and the Barrowmans' writing.
review 2: There was a great deal in here that I loved: a new Torchwood-style crew that is based on a ship, a wonderful sci-fi idea as a new home for the Torchwood software, an exotic location, and a nice link to the hunt for the families responsible for the events of "Miracle Day", to say nothing of helix energy dating back to classic "Doctor Who" episodes. The problem is actually the other Torchwood elements getting in the way. Not only do Gwen, Rhys & Andy feels superfluous to events, they all feel like they come from an earlier age of "Torchwood", especially in relation to Jack. By the end of "Miracle Day", Gwen, Rhys & Jack were a unit in their own right...but you could be forgiven that all of this felt like we were back in the relationship dynamics of late season one/early season two. If "Exodus Code" had been a solo Jack Harkness adventure -- the character it handles (understandably) the best -- it would have easily reached four stars. less

Great book. The story was difficult to follow at times, but the characters were well written.
