The Disappearance
review 1: I rarely read books that haven't been on my "To Read" list for a while first. However, I found myself out of town without a book, and picked this up because the jacket copy sounded intriguing.Technothrillers are a guilty pleasure of mine; my "junk food books". The plot of this one was entertaining, and the story moved along at a decent pace, so it measured up to what I expected for leisure reading. What's wrong with this book? Awkward narration (and occasionally dialogue) that is so cringeworthy it completely derails the story every dozen pages or so.
review 2: This is the last installment of the “The Disappearance” story – and I’m torn whether to be happy or sad. I originally started reading it just to finish the trilogy. Actually though, it turned ou
... moret to be much better written that the prior installment. (I particularly liked the second half of the book.)The premise is just so darn thought-provoking. The population of the US is now 30 million instead of 300 – yet much of the infrastructure remains. The political intrigue is interesting and the little snippets of life are fascinating e.g. professional sports, TV, the economy, etc.The characters were much better developed and I’d now like to hear more from a few – an assassin, Caitlin Monroe (she real kicks ass) and a Polish Army Ranger – so I’m hoping the author, John Birmingham, has plans for them. less

Good, first two books were the stronger of the series but this one was enjoyable as well.
