review 1: It honestly started out like a turn of the screw ripoff, but got chillingly creepier as the story went on. It's a short book, but it does the atmospheric horror super well. I really could believe I was reading something from either Dickens or Henry James. Reminded me quite strongly of "The Woman in Black", but this one had a sharper and more macabre feel to it, especially at the end of it all. Very well done.
review 2: 3.5 stars. I really liked this book! Written during the time of Dickens - this story reminds me of Jane Eyre and Rebecca. When you mix them all together you get the story of the Haunted House. It being October I thought it would be a great read for Halloween and it did not disappoint. The only reason I did not give it 4 stars was the ending. It s... moreeemed hurried and then abruptly ends and I didn't like that. Definitely worth reading though - I just would have liked the ending to have gone on a little longer to get a few questions answered about what happened after. less
