review 1: Prachtig verhaal dat je in één ruk wil uitlezen. Alfie, het negenjarige hoofdpersonage, is opnieuw een krachtig uitgewerkt personage waar je van gaat houden. Hoewel het boek veel treurige momenten kent - en ik daar geregeld bij heb zitten snotteren - kent het ook veel feel good momenten. Hier en daar ontbrak het aan geloofwaardigheid, maar dat heeft niet afgedaan van hoe erg ik van het boek genoot. (Hooguit van de uiteindelijke waardering, ik durf niet te veel toe te lichten vanwege spoilers die ik dan kan vrijgeven)
review 2: This book is written from the viewpoint of a British boy whose father goes to serve in World War I. Very serious topics are discussed and demonstrated without being explicit or too violent. The truly terrifying part of this book is wh... moreat people do to others in a time of war. I liked this book, but don't know who I would recommend it to. It would be an excellent additional read for a junior high student who is learning about WWII. I'm not sure there are many elementary students I know who would appreciate the story. Like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the awful truth is there, in front of the reader, to discover. less
