review 1: I thought that the novel Changeup by John Feinstein was a perfect example of what a great sports book should look like. The story takes place at the World Series in Washington, D.C. and Boston. The two protagonists, Stevie and Susan are teenage sports reporters who are covering the World Series. There, they meet a rookie pitcher for the Washington Nationals, Norbert Doyle. Norbert has a great life story, but a tragic past. He claimed that his wife died when a drunk driver hit their car over 10 years ago. But as Stevie and Susan dig deeper into Norbert's past, it seems as if the real story was never revealed. This book is told through the eyes of Stevie and Susan. They are just two young, teenage reporters who want to know the truth about Norbert's past. They think that Norb... moreert knows something that the rest of the world doesn't. For Stevie and Susan, they are investigators by day and World Series reporters at night. They tracked the story down all the way to a police report in Norbert's hometown that was written over a decade ago. At one point, one of the cops who was at the scene of the crash sent his dog on Stevie. At another point, Stevie was slapped by Norbert's daughter and got into a fist fight with Norbert's son because they were trying to stop the truth from being revealed. But eventually, the truth came out. The truth that Norbert was drunk with his wife. And she was driving the car before she drove head on into a tree.I would reccomend this book to all teenagers and adults who love the sence of sports, mystery, and adventure. This book ended several chapters with clif hangers. Each chapter was more exciting then the last. It's EXETREMLY suspenseful. You never know what's going to happen next. And this carries out through the entire book. I had so many questions that I couldn't wait to get answered. They were answered dramatically. The perspectives of Stevie and Susan are both unique and special in different ways.
review 2: So this book is actually the fourth in a series, which I did not know while I was reading it. Luckily I was able to still have everything make sense, so you don't have to read the other books before reading this one. And I know, it is a baseball book, but I found it a very enjoyable read. It was mostly a mystery book instead of a baseball one, so you probably won't get bored while reading it. My only thing about the baseball is that I found all the terms and lingo really confusing. But if you're like me, you can just skip all the baseball paragraphs (they don't come up too often) and just read the dialogue in between. Everything still made sense to me and I didn't have to worry about understanding the baseball terms. This was a really good mystery where I had no clue as to how it was going to end. In some mysteries you can always tell what is going to happen, what the story is, but with this one kept changing and adding more puzzle pieces to the mix. Stevie and Susan Carol were a lot of fun as reporters. Stevie was not afraid to follow up on a story, even with all the tasks and dangers in his way. He kept trying to understand the story and find all the pieces, even while other people were cautioning him not to or getting in his way. Susan Carol was more of a supporting character, but she still played a big role in the book. She added more mystery to the whole puzzle and was able to throw a little more drama in their that would have otherwise been lacking. I really enjoyed this book, so even though it is a baseball book I would suggest for you to read it. less
