review 1: I liked it. Probably because I like baseball. I think this is one of those books that is probably 5 stars if you LOVE baseball and probably 1 star if you could care less about baseball. It gives interesting insight into the "behind the scenes" highs and lows of those "in-between players" - the ones that stand out as the very best players in the Minor Leagues, but aren't quite good enough to consistently get into and stay in the majors.
review 2: I was expecting something different ("sportswriter follows hapless minor league team/players for a season, hijinks ensue") - it was actually more of a look specifically at Triple A, which is made up of players on the "cusp" of big-league-dom....either on the way up, or down. Also followed an umpire and manager at tha
... moret level, describing what life is like for them as well. The overall theme is how every one of those transactions on page 2 of the sports page (the "agate" typeface) dictates entire lifestyle changes for families. Highly recommended for baseball fans. less
