review 1: 5.0 out of 5 stars With Donovan Creed, off you Go !!!, December 17, 2010What a pace Saving Rachel sets right from the start! The moment you open the book, off you go! Reading Saving Rachel is like riding in an out of control car up and down hills and valleys. You'll be rolling along enjoying his prose and unique sense of humor and bam, here comes a twist you weren't ready for, and the whole direction of the book changes. When the author comes to the end of a chapter, his ability to come to an abrupt halt is classic. He makes you come to a complete stop and look both ways before continuing. One of the things I enjoyed so much about Saving Rachel was how one of the main characters, Sam Case, was able to see himself as an unfaithful geek who nonetheless, thought he deserved a ... morehigh-priced Audi, a 13,000 sq. ft. house even though some of his 18 clients were probably terrorists and thieves, because he designed a brilliant computer system. Unfortunately, one of those clients, Donovan Creed, played ball the hard way. Creating the day Case had in the first part of the story was an imaginative achievement when writing. When Case, Rachel, Karen and Kevin finally get all together, it is a confusing, hilarious image you can visualize. You find out Rachel wasn't who you thought she was, Karen wasn't who you thought she was and Kevin wasn't who you thought he was, but Creed was enjoying all of it. The ensuing confrontations were even more comical as it included thugs, midgets, a lesbian (or was she?) and, worst of all, nobody really knew if they were going to get out of it alive; except maybe Creed. John Locke is a master of surprise, and a complete genius at a designing this genre of crafty plot, and he left you chuckling; totally absorbed in the story all the way to the end.Saving Rachel is another example of a blockbuster author when he is in caught up in writing the unforgettable series of Donovan Creed stories, and like all the others, it should not be missed. He lets go and slings it at us and we love trying to " get it". Like the speed of the car, it is one fast-paced book. You can't put it down.
review 2: I've never read any of John Locke's books before, but this one looked interesting and it was cheap as an ebook. I'm glad is was such a quick read, because it was kind of ridiculous. It is absolutely necessary to suspend your sense of disbelief while reading this book. The part that really just didn't work for me, was when the main character Sam, is being chased by... a pack of midgets. I'm sorry, but what? Apparently it connects to other Donovan Creed books, but it was just too much. If I wasn't already half way through the book, I would have given up at that point.Sometimes it was moving so fast and it was so random, that I felt like I was reading a Choose Your Own Adventure novel. Also, why was it necessary to say "Karen Vogel" almost EVERY TIME she was mentioned?! There is only one Karen, you don't have to keep saying her last name. Anyway, I don't think I'll be looking for any more John Locke books any time soon. Best selling self published author? Just a reason for me to go back to avoiding self published things.
