review 1: It am uncertain of 3 stars. Maybe 2.5 but I think this book is more than ok. I only liked parts of it. The scenes where you are inside Lowboys head are brilliantly written and give an intriguing, dazzling view of how schizophrenics may see the world. But I think the book suffered due to the long scenes involving Lateef (the detective), and Lowboys mum, who were both out searching for him after he escaped from the clinic. I wish the author had devoted the vast majority to Lowboy and I think large parts of the scenes not involving him could have been edited out.On the whole it is worth a look.
review 2: Part thriller, part coming-of-age and save-the-world adventure (making the whiny Harry Potter's face off with scary ol' Voldemort look quite tame), John Wray's LO
... moreWBOY takes the reader on a journey through the eyes and ears of a sixteen year old paranoid schizophrenic on a mission of utmost importance. On November 11, Lowboy escapes into the New York City subway system from the institution he has been locked up in for the past two years. Wray alternates chapters between Lowboy's narrative, and that of Detective Ali Lateef, the man responsible for returning him safely with the help of his mother, Violet. Via these dual narratives, Wray creates two world visions distinctively and effortlessly, and to great effect. Particularly Lowboy's observations of the world around him, delivered in short, precise sentences, from the universally familiar sound the subway doors make when closing, to the sights, sounds and feelings unique to Lowboy and his illness. Because of his illness, he should be the epitomy of the unreliable narrator, and yet, Wray's wonderful use of language pulls the reader along for the ride in an alarming way. It is this easy juxtaposition between fact and fiction that is most thrilling, and most dangerous. Further complicating the reader's view of Lowboy is the presence of an intelligent young woman named Emily, a confusing accomplice to his adventure, especially as the threat of violence, both past and future, grows stronger. less
