review 1: I'm not a dog person, so I'm not even sure why I decided to read this. In fact, the author's decidedly negative attitude to cats was rather off-putting. On the plus side, with a couple of exceptions - including one rather odd excursion into mysticism - Katz seems to do an excellent job of portraying canine psychology. His affectionate but for the most part unsentimental approach made it interesting.
review 2: This book is good, but a bit saddening, even though the sad parts are about real life. I guess I'm more of an escapist, and want uplifting things that can inspire me instead of reminding me of the hard truths about life - although it does stretch surprisingly into true fantasy near the end - a jarring note, I found, in such a real life depiction. ... moreuite sure why I didn't enjoy it other than it's overall tragedy theme. So much of the story is written from a dog's point of view, which I found charming in my younger days but this time found it hard to reconcile with my vaster knowledge of dogs, self-awareness, and sentience. Or maybe I'm just too old for that now! Oddly, I am glad I read it now that it's done and the sadness has retreated from me somewhat. less
