review 1: Although I have loved many Jon Katz books, this one is a real disappointment. It's not really about the dog pictured; mostly it is about his relationship with the dog's owner, a woman he ends up marrying. Katz is whiny and self absorbed, which gets tiring, as he tries to sort his life out. The book is redundant and sometimes confusing. Where was his editor??? I kept reading, hoping to get to the dog part and learn something, but even that was a disappointment. Yuck.
review 2: I have been a big fan of Jon Katz for years, since I read _A Dog Year_. He clearly cares about his animals very much and is talented at both training them and writing about them. The dog story in this book was enjoyable, like all of his other dog stories I have read. His story of developi... moreng mutual trust with a dog that many would see as hopeless is touching. The human love story, however, made me feel rather uneasy. It may just be that he is better at writing about dogs than people, but his "love story" felt more like he was pushing a vulnerable woman into spending her life with him in order to fill a void. Both the story and the way he tells it seem to show a lack respect for his ex-wife as well. Thankfully, he spends more time telling about the dog than the new love of his life, though, so I really did enjoy most of the book! less
