review 1: Spaceheadz, Book #1, by Jon Scieszka, is a creative and funny science fiction chapter book. It is about fifth-grader, Michael K.'s first day at a new school. He is seated next to and placed into groups with two other new students, Jennifer and Bob, who are very strange. They do not seem to know anything about typical American school or expected behavior and they speak almost exclusively in commercial slogans or sayings, such as McDonald's "I'm Lovin' It." They even sound just like the commercials! Michael K. is worried about being pegged as a weirdo because they won't leave him alone. Jennifer and Bob tell him that they are from the planet Spaceheadz where they feed on the radio waves coming from Earth (hence the use of commercial sayings) and they need to recruit 3.14 mil... morelion humans to become Spaceheads or else the Earth will be "turned off." The day gets weirder and weirder for Michael K. and he is determined to not believe anything Jennifer and Bob told him. By the very end of the day Michael K. believes them and even starts to enjoy their bizarre behavior, but not before he tried to turn them in to the AAA (Anti-Alien Agency.) He must think fast and rescue them from getting taken away by the AAA agent. In the end, he helps them begin recruiting Earthlings to become Spaceheadz.Spaceheadz is a funny book that would be great for any 3-5th grader that is interested in aliens. Even if students don't typically read science fiction they will enjoy this book because there is a lot in it that most elementary students can relate to, such as anxiety about the first day of school and looking "cool" to their classmates. Between each chapter there is a informative page about the nature of sound waves, so a little bit of science is incorporated into the book. There are interesting illustrations throughout the books that students will appreciate as well. This book would be great for independent reading because it is very engaging.
review 2: I like the book, Spaceheadz, by Jon Scieszka. I think the author did a great job developing the characters as aliens from other planets, struggling with life on Earth. The aliens went to school and met a new boy named Michael K. The aliens worked hard to complete their mission to turn kids into SPHDZ. The funniest part of the whole plot is that it is masterminded by one small, tiny hamster! I recommend this book to readers who enjoy funny stories. The author has also written many other books in this series and from his own life that you might also like to read. less
