review 1: 4 AND 1/2 STARSI was grateful to not know anything about this story before I read it. I went in blind and as the revelations began to unfold, I was thrilled and delighted with the results. Jonathan Maberry, author of the highly impressive Pine Deep trilogy, Joe Ledger thrillers and the young adult zombie series, Rot and Ruin, has managed to come up yet again with a fresh take on the horror genre. Without giving anything away, this story follows Sam Hunter, a private investigator looking into an ex-husband of his client who she claims is planning to kill her. This easily has the potential to be another great series. The ideas in this story only scratch the surface to what could be numerous books Maberry should expand on. The author drops many clues along the way which... more will keep the reader hooked. Definitely recommended.
review 2: If the sharp, snarky dialogue of hardboiled fiction crossed with supernatural elements (vampires/werewolves) sounds like something you would enjoy, you should definitely read this short story from Jonathan Maberry, one of the most reliable and entertaining authors working in the horror/thriller domain. The first part of the story uncoils like a standard issue hardboiled tale, with a back-alley, down-on-his-luck private dick being hired by a beautiful woman to protect her from an abusive boyfriend. Of course, as is the nature of these kind of tales, things are not what they seem on the surface, and in the second half of the story things take a supernatural--and violent--turn. (Gore fans who enjoy plasma spillage will not be disappointed.)Maberry is one of those select authors who seem incapable of penning a bad book/story and his successful streak does not end here. "Like Part of the Family" is a welcome addition to his canon and here's hoping we get to visit Sam Hunter again in a full-length novel sooner rather than later. less

I dislike short stories. Not enough background info. Otherwise.... I didn't hate it.

The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because it was too short. But a very good book.
