review 1: This was a delicious, descriptive well-written short story full of Christmas memories. I think it touched my mind and heart as it brought back memories of my own childhood Christmases in North Dakota. When Joseph Bottum was describing the scent of new books, I could smell them. When he discussed the food found when visiting neighbors and friends or the bountiful selections for Christmas dinner, it brought vivid pictures to my mind. I could see and sense the emptiness of the prairie. I do recommend this book, to help remember when Christmas was a simplier time, less commercial, but yet people had plenty to make them happy. This is a lovely little Christmas read.
review 2: Christmas books are typically either rooted in religion, or in North Pole fantasies.
... moreThis one is different. The author is skilled in expressing the quiet thoughts of a man remembering his boyhood, of the real experiences contrasting with the hype of today's holidays, and of the true nature of the winter season and the people who survive it. It can be read in an evening's time, and is well worth it. This book will delight the men in ones family as well as the women and teens, all searching for an end to the holiday hype that exhausts us, and may inspire some to write their own reflective thoughts in a journal, for later recollection. less

Short and more dry than sweet but nice Christmas tales.
