review 1: A very interesting collection of stories by J. R. R. Tolkien. Some of the stories were clearly meant to be read aloud to children, but are highly enjoyable to child and adult alike. The verses collected under the name Adventures of Tom Bombadil are, most of them, haunting and slightly melancholy. The Smith of Wootton Major is inspiring and stimulates the imagination.Another feature of this book (to classicists) is the occasional bit of Greek or Latin, such as the wealthy dragon Chrysophylax (Χρυσοφυλαξ), 'Guard of gold', with his great hoard of treasures in his cave.

... moreBombadil is probably of interest to Lord of the Rings completists, but doesn't do much beside fleshing out some of the mythology there. Smith of Wootton Major is another pleasing diversion. Leaf by Niggle may be the strongest story here, but by far the best bit is the Appendix - an essay On Fairy Stories.Overall this has the feel of a money maker for the Tolkien estate. It certainly doesn't contain anything that would enhance the man's reputation. less
