review 1: The Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson is structured as a poem which makes this book very fun to read aloud. It is about a rat who steals others' belongings as he patrols the highway. The illustrator, Axel Scheffler, does an awesome job of making these illustrations bright and big which is perfect to read to an audience. He depicts the rat as a bad guy because he shows him carrying a sword and wearing a cape. The rat rides a horse throughout the story and the horse always looks pleasant. The other animals are always shown as shocked and upset when their belongings get stolen. The story ends with the duck tricking the rat into going into a cave and ending up on the other side of town working as a floor sweeper in a bakery. This story is witty and funny and perfect for a 2nd gra... morede audience. My favorite part of this story is the way the words act almost like a song, so it can be a little predictable how the story will go. I rated this story with four stars because I think the moral of the story, stealing from others can lead to bad things happening to you, is a good one for younger children to understand but the story is told in a way that is not mocking or derogatory towards children.
review 2: The highway rat offers a few different teaching aspects. It has the classic iambic pentameter of Julia's work and promotes some really good issues to talk about. The first being a tale of mischief and trickery. Teaching children the structure of mischief for another genre they can write about, making up their own way of tricking the traitor through the hugging of the highway rat structure. PHSE in how to act on others possessions and why it is not kind to take things that are not yours.I would pitch this book at year 2 year 3 to look at how to describe villains and how to describe empathy in characters. The illustrations also allow for more descriptive writing of characters. less

The rat in this story learns his lesson about how to treat others. Read to find out what he does.

I'm a huge Julia Donaldson fan, but this book was a serious disappointment.
