review 1: This is a book that can't seem to decide if it was meant for academics or regular people (parents, children, teachers, librarians). Most of the books are easily found, but many are not. Some are out of print. Some are not available at all except in a handful of university libraries scatted around the globe. Anyone who actually wants to read all of the titles in this book will be hard pressed to find all of books. It was a great idea and has a great base of terrific children's books, but as an academic exercise, it is far too short and doesn't include books from a great many countries. As a book geared toward regular readers, it is far too exclusionary and exclusive.

It introduces an American reader to books not familiar on this continent. The guide does provide many American books too. I use the book for my career in education as well as a coffee table book at home. It is fun to peruse through at leisure. The entries are short, the paper is glossy and illustrations are colorful just a good children's book should be. Very nice book. less
