review 1: 3.5 stars. Maybe the problem was that I came to it after reading all the other five novels, so I'd met everyone else already. In fact, the first one I read was How to School Your Scoundrel, and in comparison with Somerton and Luisa, Penhallow and Lilibet both seem a bit insipid. I enjoyed returning to the Tuscan setting and the stories' framework, but I wasn't as delighted with this one as with the others. And while all of these men - even the paranoid, self-harming bully Somerton - are of course far too good to be true, old Roland Penhallow is simply TOO good. His Scarlet-Pimpernel-esque persona of the dim-witted, shallow rake never rang true, maybe because we never SEE him like that. I don't regret reading AGNT, partly to see what the show-down looks like from Penhallow'... mores and Lilibet's perspective, but it benefits from the glow of the other five.
review 2: 3.5 stars for this sweet, funny story - the extra 0.5 star is for the great humour and for Philip, the 5 year old heart stealer. JG has used the device of telling the story from the varying perspectives of 3 couples in a series of 3 books. While I enjoyed this one overall, it dragged at times and the villain was painted to be far more dark than what the story revealed. Also the author strangely left the villain's, Somerton, fate unclear at the end, specially as he has a role in Naval Intelligence. Much preferred Book 1, A Lady Never Lies. Have been attracted to Abigail's character through the glimpses given in Books 1 & 2, so am looking forward to her antics and story. less
