review 1: This is a good read despite itself. Let me explain by first listing its sins.* Typos abound. There are so many typos that it throws you off when reading. Especially when it says, for example, "her" when it should have been "he." That's an important distinction!* At times it was like Long was adding more sentences to meet a page requirement or something. There's lots of faux confusion. Lots of unsure feelings that are suddenly sure with one smoldering look, but then it's back to being unsure two pages later. The storm scene where Violet is trying to figure out what Flint is up to is a good illustration of this. Tedious!*The purple prose. A little is okay, too much is just eyeball roll-inducing. *Repetitive. Using the word ironic (in all its varying forms) is her writing tic... more.*Ridiculous title. Can anyone read that without hearing that dreaded Katy Perry song "I kissed a girl"? Now, all of that out of the way, here's the good:* Violet is a good character, and written in such a way that you can completely believe her impulsivity. She's not "too stupid to live" but rather, so much a blend of entitlement, privilege, and ambition that she takes risks with the assumption that it will work. Although, running out into a storm to save Flint (who, as a seasoned captain, was used to rough seas and did not need saving) was just plain stupid. * Flint was also a great character. Upended from his usual leadership role, hard, yet sentimental. Commanding a room everywhere he goes, but belonging nowhere...he was a complex and enjoyable character.*Great secondary characters. Lavay, Hercules, etc. were fun additions.* Very good plot development. The sighting of Lyon, and the understanding of his mission and why it's problematic for his quest of winning back Olivia was an excellent set up for the last book in the series (which I cannot wait for!).
review 2: Yes there were a lot of typos, and I did think the plot was far fetched but I still liked elements of it. Violet who has done some wacky things in the past, stows away on a ship when she thinks her brother is the Dread pirate Roberts (wait that's the princess bride plot), er the pirate Le Chat -which is explained repeatedly as cat=lion=Lyon. Yes her missing brother Lyon, could be the pirate - after all the ship is named Olivia like the Eversea girl who broke her brother's heart. Violet meets an officer named Lavay- the same name shouted out by a fortune teller in a previous book. She also meets his captain- a man who is Americanish- British by birth, but raised in America. (Not enough of his background was told). He also has Native American and is a bastard- literally. But he teaches Violet some life lessons and she beats him in chess. They are 2 strategists who seem doomed not to be able to love for he has been ordered to capture the pirate, and Violet cannot forgive someone who hurts her family. less

There are pirates! No one told me there would be pirates! Well, privateers, but potato/potahto.

Probably my favorite of the series so far, although I really didn't like the wrap up.

The author did a great job; the copy editor, not so much.
