review 1: Pupaphobia - Fear of puppets Chase the wounded Eversea war hero suffers from it. They are creepy and annoying in this story and by the end I hated puppets. If you don't like marrionette's just read someone's summary to catch up. This book was the first disappointment in what has been a wonderful historical/humorous romance series. The scenes with intimacy seem contrived - was the author thinking and now where can I have my Hero/Heroine do it? The story is worth reading because I plan to continue the series and it was nice to hear updates on Colin Eversea - the perfect male hero of book 1. His brother Chase also has a naughty sense of humor and his attraction to a "Leidy" - Mrs. March the young wife of his commanding officer. When a street urchin brings him a note from... more a lady it is mysterious and a plea for help. The lady is the one who he was tempted by when in the service. They had spontaneous combustion once and when they reconnect it's like a 7 alarm fire. But the plot is odd and so are the puppets. Ewww. heeby jeebie shudder right now.
review 2: I should knock off a star because the "mystery" plot was kind of really terrible and convoluted but I loved the romance so much that I'm giving it 5 stars anyway. This is my first Julie Anne Long book (I randomly pointed and clicked at something in my to-read menu) and as I got deeper and deeper into the story the more impressed I was at her writing. It mostly depends on Chase and Rosalind's years of unresolved sexual tension and usually I find that shallow? But I fully bought into it here. Her prose incredibly refreshing, she got me cackling out loud with her understated humor, and there's this emotional intelligence and poignance that shines through that I'm having trouble describing, something very specific that I've only ever felt in my best beloved books. I just really really loved the characterizations in this one, it's now on my list of comfort reads. less
