review 1: This was my favorite HR of 2013 followed by What I Did For A Duke by the same author!I thought that the first book in this series was amazing and unforgettable, the first one is THE PERILS OF PLEASURE. This one is better in some ways. The plot is completely different, this is not a caper/action/suspense type of romance. THE SETUP: Basically a country house party where a group of people has fun getting to know one another. There were more characters, more witty dialogue, and much more humor! In fact, it is quite possibly the most intelligently funny historical romance I have ever read. I actually had trouble catching my breath from laughing so hard in a few places. The plot did not have as much suspense, danger and intrigue as the first book in the series, TPOP, but it ... moreis a more brisk and evenly-paced read with fewer editorial annoyances. I already re-read it in 2013!I already wrote a longer review on Amazon, as I was not on GR when I read this story.
review 2: Julie Anne Long is a great writer and while I loved the writing style, I really hated the characters in this one and couldn't get myself to finish the story. I finally had enough when the heroine, who is currently dangling after three men, decided that she didn't have to worry about one of her potential conquests because his current dance partner had marks on her face and hairy arms. The heroine is always like this. In the first 30% of the book she privately makes fun of others' laughs, clothes, appearances, personalities, and interests. I recognize she is in dire straits, but her own vanity put her there. There are plenty of heroines who are in similar circumstances who are much more sympathetic to others instead of mean spirited and cynical. This heroine truly thought because of her appearance and wit that she was better than others. She was drawn to Miles because he knew this about her. However, she also recognized that he was shallow and was truly attracted to her because of her looks. Beauty is only skin deep and this one was ugly underneath. The hero wasn't much better. He was a self absorbed, condescending boor. Maybe these two did deserve each other...regardless I just didn't care. This does not mean Julie Anne Long is a bad writer. Her writing is wonderful. In this instance, I just couldn't relate to the leading characters. I will be trying others in the series that I can get my hands on! less

Lots of familiar historical-romance tropes, but very charmingly and entertainingly written.
