review 1: A solid effort from Juliet Marillier, but not one of my favorite by her. Some pros - an exciting plot (although somewhat obvious, it still kept my attention); a strong female lead with a complex character whose storyline is not primarily a love story; some strong feminist bona fides in a genre (even when written by women) that is not known for that tendency; a male lead who is masculine yet loves books and animals; and a tripartite narration structure that works well and gives interesting perspective on some overlapping events. The books is rawer than her other works; there's torture (in a character's past) and cursing. High fantasy but more gritty. Yet the characters didn't captivate me the way they have in some of her other works although I'm not exactly sure why. Th... moreis is noted to be the first book in the "Blackthorne and Grim" series, so I'm sure that there will be more about these characters and I look forward to that.
review 2: This was a great fantasy novel. It just sicked me in. I couldn't put it down. The main characters are a wise woman and a man who were both in prison. A bargain is made: a fey creature will let her out if she promises to help anyone who needs help for 7 years. And delay her revenge against the man who put her in prison. It has small town/village life. Little details of the people Blackthorn helps and the mysteries that need solving. I really liked this book and cannot wait for the sequel. (No cliff hanger ending, but you are left wanting more)One negative: I don't know who the woman on the cover is supposed to be. Blackthorn has red hair. The other main female character, Flidais, is blonde. I have no idea why there is a black haired woman on the cover. less
