review 1: Finley Jayne's adventures continue in New York City. Can they save Jasper Renn?At the end of the Girl in the Steel Corset, Jasper has been abducted and taken back to New York. Following on his heels, Griffin and the gang settle into the Waldorf-Astoria and try to find Jas. Finley quickly finds out that he's being held by a gangster-type, and decides to infiltrate the group. She doesn't realize just how dangerous this guy is, and that as charming as he is, he's no Jack Dandy.Another fun adventure with Finley which includes an appearance by Nicola Tesla! The characters find out more about each other, and about themselves. Griffin's control over the Aether grows, along with his affections for Finley. I've been really tired of series books lately, but when I crave some adventu... morere, I will definitely pick up the next book in this one.
review 2: 3.5 stars. In this second book in the series, we meet up with Cross' "straynge band of mysfits" on their way to New York. If you are looking at this series strictly from a steampunk perspective, then this book has a lot less to do with that genre than the first book but it in no way takes away from the story. I love steampunk as the much as the next reader, but I do not soley stick with series for the intricacies of the fantasy and science fictions, you have to like characters - and I do. I really like Finley and Emily in particular, and the introduction of a new character Wildcat. Cross has a way of writing some awesome female characters. What I love about this series and will continue to love is that Finley never, and I mean really never needs anyone to save her, in fact she does most of the saving. This new adventure taking place on American soil, has new villans, new allies and new encounters with the Aether (albiet briefly). We finally learn some new background on Jasper and some interesting love interests. What we don't see though is what is going on with Emily and Sam: Sam continues being moody and short tempered but that is about all we get! Finley and Griffin have some nice tension but he says something extremely stupid that I will not write here in case it spoils it for any other reader - but overall we do some interesting developments with those two - that is all I will say! If you like Finley, if you enjoyed the first book, definitely check this one out. less
