A Liss MacCrimmon Mystery
review 1: Not my cup of tea. However,I give the author full points for having tension between a couple because of her job as police officer. However, this is the second time I have tried to read it and I just can't get into very much. I do give it another credit nod for the friendship between the central characters.I think its the romantic sub-plot that irks me, and at times it is a little too cute for me.
review 2: This is the third Liss MacCrimmon cozy mystery I have read, and while I have enjoyed them all,I have to admit that there were times in all three books when I was very close to being fed up with the behavior Liss exhibited. Even as she talks about the "too stupid to live" heroine, there are times Liss is the embodiment of one. She seems to have an attitude
... more that screams "I know more than the police". This was true in the first book, where the officer in charge decided Liss had committed the murder and looked no further than her. However, in these last two books, this detective has been transferred and replaced by an officer who not only seems to know what he is doing, but even goes so far as to ask Liss out! Certainly not someone who is treating her with disrespect. In this third book, it is Christmastime in Moosetookalook, and the shops in the little town are looking for customers, since there has been no snow yet to bring tourists to Western Maine. By amazing coincidence, three of the shops (including the one Liss owns) have the only supply of this years hot toy left in all of New England. When the proprietor of one of these stores is murdered, EVERYONE advises Liss to stay out of the investigation. Can she do it? NOPE!! In fact, it gets so bad that she breaks into a home to try to get evidence on the person she suspects, after the police have determined he had nothing to do with the murder. Even as she tries to figure out why it is so important to her to solve the murder, she does things that have the reader just shaking her head. I know that the main character in a cozy is supposed to solve the mystery, but the obsession Liss seems to have with it becomes wearing after a while. As I said, I have enjoyed these books, and will give the next a try, but I really hope that this "I know better than everyone" attitude Liss has been exhibiting softens, or I may not be able to like her enough to read the rest of her series. less

Not high literature or even Agatha Christie, but a quick, fun, holiday read.
