review 1: This book was hauntingly beautiful. The POV was that of a young girl so many of the plots have enough foreshadowing that an adult reading it will know what is happening before the main character. Instead of ruining a big reveal, it heightens the story by creating suspense. The reader figures out what happened in the past, but is kept in suspense as to the future. The story is elegantly unfolded like a flower in the secret garden itself. The characters are believable In Their joys, fears, flaws, and relationships with each other. The family both desperately loves each other and are tied by invisible chains to their own fears, pride, and to destiny itself unable to escape the circle of pain they have made for themselves. The story does have one final twist that the reader s... morehould see coming, but doesn't. This causes the story to end on a bittersweet note. Happy ending it does not have, but definitely a hopeful one. The older generation may not be able to escape the pain and consequences of their tightly wound past, but the younger one still has hope to break the cycle. It has been a long time since I have read a book that was so hard to put down as this one. It is the author's first novel. And I eagerly look forward to finding other material by her.
review 2: One element of a great writer is one that can create relatable characters and relationships that transcends cultural boundaries. I really enjoyed this story. In one summer a child's innocent illusions are shattered, ideas she has of her parents relationship and of her mother's persona. Unresolved issues from the past seemingly doomed her mother's future happiness but the lessons from that summer that Rakhee learned kept her from potentially making the same mistake. Family loyalty is such a strong trait to the Indian family it can be both a blessing and a curse. It's a must read. less
