review 1: The ending of this book really disappointed me. Not because it wasn't done well....because I wanted it to be different!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story....it had a little bit of everything: mystery, adventure, romance, multiple villains, secrets and suspense. It was an interesting mix of religion during the middles ages (Inquisition) and mystical "old ways" and magic. I learned a little bit about Portugal and a lot about Iceland :)It did drag a bit in a few places which is why I gave it 4 stars.Karen Maitland remains one of my very favourite authors!
review 2: A fascinating topic that I haven't encountered before (the Inquisition in Portugal) or really had reason to think about coupled with a setting I have seldom visited (medieval Iceland) made for a
... morevery interesting book. That said, as it was very unfamiliar, I struggled a bit to picture the setting and circumstances (although this is hardly the fault of the author).I enjoyed this better than The Gallows Curse, partly because it was so interesting, but still find it lacking the intensity and simple Gothic nature of The Owl Killers and Company of Liars.I did appreciate learning about Icelandic mythology and still enjoyed the little twists and confusions I associate with Maitland. Recommended for fans of the author, medieval European fiction and/or Gothic literature. less
