review 1: This is a continuation of my review on the Highlander Series. So I will simply add that Moning ventures away from the romance novel/light fantasy novel established in the Highlander series and enters the world of paranormal. Well worth the read!Honestly, this reminded me of Harry Potter with a feel for True Calling...you remember that drama series a decade ago about the girl who could see dead people. There is a maze of mirrors, an aggressive, possessed book that makes Hagrid's Monster Book of Monsters seem tame, and a mysterious beast that I'm still puzzled about years after finishing the series! Evil fae find a way into Dublin (as seen and explained in the final book of the Highlander series) and literally...all hell breaks loose! My only disappointment? No McKelta... morers! After falling in love with them HARD in the Highlander series, I was distraught that Moning only barely mentioned the twins :(I highly recommended donating the time to the Highlander series first.
review 2: This review is going to be filled with spoilers, so if you haven't read the books yet, be careful. I really enjoyed the series overall, I read them all in a week because at the end of every book I was so eager to read the next. Just to be clear: this isn't really a review for people who want to know if they should read this, because it gives away to much. I's just a way for me to let off some steam.Things I liked:- Mac: she is a great character in my opinion. She starts out a bit one dimensional, but becomes very interesting very quickly. I like that she's not the typical kick-ass heroine (Like Kate Daniels for instance, though I like that series as well). Sure, she can be very tough, but she's not afraid to admit that she's in over her head. She starts out as a girl who's pretty oblivious to the nastier parts of life, and the death of her sister is the first blow that shakes her perfect world. There is a lot of character development there.- V'lane: I absolutely loved his ending, I didn't see it coming. Throughout the book he does several great or nice things, but also suspicious things. Though I suspected him a few times, Moning was very succesful in making me have doubts.- The creatures, especially the unseelie. I liked the descriptions, some of them were just plain nasty and with some others the idea of them being dangerous and deadly was believable to me.- Barrons' backstory. Spoiler for the ending: I loved that Moning killed the child, as crude as that may sound. For a moment I was worried it was going to be a sappy, the family lives happily ever after ending, and I'm glad that didn't happen.- The feel of the story. Throughout the books the series grew darker, the bad guys and monsters were more dangerous and the world building was very believable to me. One of the most important things to me is to have a believable villain and I really like the villain(s) in this story. I felt for Mac and was just engrossed in the story.- The sex. There wasn't a whole lot of sex in the story, and only later on in the books, but to me it didn't feel that way. The sexual tension was always there, which in some ways was more satisfying that it would have been if the first book had sex scenes in it. It's a series of 5 books, you wan't to give it all away too soon, I thought the build up was done nicely.Things I disliked:- The slow moving relationship between Mac and Barrons. In every book of the series, Barrons does something that makes Mac distrust hims, then he does something that makes her trust him again, and then she doesn't trust him again. This just goes back and forth throughout the series and it never seems to go anywhere, not untill the second half of the last book. Though I liked some aspects of their relationship, I wish there had been some moments where it showed that they at the very least liked or respected each other.- Barrons backstory. I know, I both like and dislike it. Some other reviewer said that it was disappointing that Barron's identity was something completely new, and I agree with that. There was no possible way of knowing wat he was, because nothing like him was shown in the books and there was no clue. I liked wat he turned out the be, but again, like the other reviewer said, being able to give hints throughout the series and letting it all come together in the end is one of the marks of a great writer. For instance, I loved Snape's backstory in Harry Potter. I myself didn't guess it, but I love that the hints were there and when I read the series again I had many of these 'aha!' moments.- Mac's torture. It's not so much that I mind that she got tortured, but that afterwards she walked away from it like it was nothing. I'm not an expert, but I think it's safe to assume that it would be pretty traumatizing.- Mac as the Unseelie king. Honestly, Mac believes that she is a super powerful, ancient dark king. This was just plain ridiculous to me.- This is one of those series where every single character is incredibly beautiful/handsome. It's unrealistic and unnecessary, Moning's characters are interesting enough without her having to resort to this. She really doesn't need it.Though there were some parts of the books that really grated on me, I like the series overall. It had some pretty awesome characters, unexpected plot twists and great world building. Most of it was believable to me and I was really ingrossed in the story. less
