review 1: The back of the book says it is a thriller. I don't think so. Up until around page 130 there is no tension at all. Just a few characters with their CV.Once your through this round of getting acquainted, the story really starts. And then it gets more interesting. You develop your own theories, which are proven wrong time and again. In the end I found two things a bit hard to believe, so that is why I rated only 2 stars and not 3.
review 2: This was my first time reading Swedish author Karin Alvtegen and I really enjoyed Shadow. At its heart are the complex family dynamics that bind us tightly to each other – do they suffocate us? Define us? And it asks how far we would go to protect our reputations? Our own reputation and those other reputations we feed on and
... more benefit from. The book starts with two departures – a little boy abandoned by his mother and an old woman who has departed this life. With no one to claim her belongings, it has been left to council official Marianne Folkesson to clear Gerda Persson’s house and to bury her with dignity. With a little digging, it transpires that Gerda was a housekeeper to the Ragnerfeldt family – the award-winning father, his bitter wife, their son and his disappointed wife and disengaged daughter. The arrival of Halina into their lives shifts the plates upon which everyone was resting and creates unforeseen consequences with devastating consequences.Secrets, lies, deception – these are all the bywords in the Ragnerfeldt family who are held in high esteem by society but barely tolerate each other.A psychological thriller, it’s well worth a read. less

Much better than I expected. A very introspective, character-driven novel.
