review 1: The nearly 20-yo first installment of a Scandinavian series based in an unnamed smallish Norwegian town. Quite a good story, with an even better structure and excellent final flourishes.. The only real downside here was prose that sometimes lacked spark, and it's tough to tell whether this was a translation issue. Several years of keeping an eye out for this really paid off - a terrific, refreshing debut.
review 2: This is the first Inspector Sejer novel, recently translated into English--I really like Karin Fossum, so happy to see this. it is like much of Scandanavian murder mysteries, where characters are morally complex, and the person you are at one moment rooting for turns out to have some seriously undesirable character traits--as happens with Eva here. ... more No happy endings, let's put it that way, and not many likaable characters. less
