review 1: Once again, Fossum centres her book on a crime that is not "pure evil" as we're used to seeing in "find the killer" books, but rather a crime that just feels unfortunate and sad. While the characters are dark, they're still human. This is particularly notable given the perpetrator in this story is a pedophile. While the story in no way forgives pedophilia, we do get a sense of the horrible nature if the affliction from both sides. And as is so often the case with her books, I did not finish it with a sense if completion, but rather with a sense that things-- bad things-- just keep going on.

... moredy to, yes, the inner mindset of the pedophile. The result is an unflinching portrayal, and it seems like Fossum did her homework to elevate this book from a standard police procedural to a psychological study, while still keeping the page-turning pace. The narrator, David Rintoul, is excellent, which added to my enjoyment of the book. less
