review 1: Once again, Fossum does not write a straight-up procedural crime novel. This is less of a "whodunit" and more of a "what did they do?" While Sejer and Skarre feature in the novel, it is primarily from the perspective of the three friends, Axel, Reilly and Jon. What I like is that we have a sense of what has happened, yet still feel in the dark. As is typical of Fossum's books, there is a pervasive sense of tragedy rather than typical "flashy" crime that's common to the genre. In fact, she sums up her own writing style in this book: "several circumstances coincide." That's what happens in her books: circumstances coincide and result in something for Sejer to solve and something to leave us feeling kind of depressed. And that's really closer to crime than most novels, movies... more and TV shows would have us believe. (However, this novel does feature Fossum's most traditionally "evil bad guy" so far in Axel Frimman.)
review 2: Another Karin Fossum book I have enjoyed reading. This is a relatively short book in the Skarre/Sejer series. A realistic and uncomplicated story, but it still keeps you engaged and hooked, as a good story should. Three young friends meet up in a cabin for the weekend and one has been granted weekend release from a psychiatric hospital. He is suffering from major anxiety and is clearly a troubled soul. He and his friends take a boat out on the lake late at night and he jumps into the water and drowns. I don't want to give anything away, but all is not what is seems and when the police are called in to investigate an apparent suicide, Sejer finds cause for further investigation into the circumstances and the reasons that the young man was admitted to the hospital in the first place, will lead Sejer/Skarre to solve another missing persons case. This series is well worth following, Ms. Fossum has written eight books in all and one stand-alone called "Broken", also one worth picking up. I hope there are others to come in the future. less
