review 1: The Unremarkable Heart is Karin Slaughter’s latest short story, published exclusively as an e-book. June Connor is dying of lung cancer; her ex-convict husband Richard is caring for her on her death bed. As she thinks back on how she has arrived at this stage, she mourns her teen-age daughter, Grace, and tries not to allow her last thoughts in this life to be depressing and negative, but thinking back to the events of twenty-one years before makes it difficult. And her husband decides, on this, her last day, to tell the shocking truth. Slaughter once again leaves the reader gasping.
review 2: The Unremarkable Heart is quite a clever bit of marketing for Karin's full length novels, Broken (out in paperback in June) and her newest book, Fallen. You get a new sh... moreort story for a few pennies and the first chapters of both books to whet your appetite.Firstly, The Unremarkable Heart is a short story based around the last days of June's life who is dying from lung cancer. The story is a reflection on her life and upcoming death and is grizzly in true Karin Slaughter style. Like many of her characters, June isn't instantly likeable and you may not even sympathise with her by the end but you can understand how her life has unravelled. Certainly worth reading for the price.The first "page" of Fallen is not the first page of the novel but a synopsis that completely ruins any suspense of what follows. I'd advise you to go straight to the page saying Chapter One if you want to read the extract. less
