review 1: This was a Smart Bitches Trashy Books book club read for me, which I'm happy with because normally this cover would have caused me to ignore this book and that would have been a tragedy. If you like romance even a little this is a book for you. There is so much here to love: Nate and Claire are both brilliant characters; fully complex and wonderfully realistic. Nate is drawn up with guilt over the death of one of his best friends and has shut everyone out. Claire, the widow, needs his physical presence for a signature for a business that she hopes will finally close the door on her grief and allow her to move on. Once he realizes what she's doing; he decides to stick around a little longer to check out her investment and make sure its sound and not a bad, hastily made desci... moresion done by a grieving and vulnerable widow. The longer they are together, the more of an attraction they feel; both of them feel vaguely guilty for this but especially Nate, who feels like he's moving on to his best friend's wife. There's a lot of tension, and little physical action up until the end which I liked. This was a book about developing love, and characters manning up to tough situations. If they'd rushed into a physical relationship it would've seemed unreal to the characters for me. There's also a lot going on with Claire's friends and family, including her son who's acting out and is desperate to connect with Nate and hear more about his dad; as well as Jules, her best friend, whom the author is setting up for her own book (which I'm really looking forward to!)There are some scenes I cried in, the grief and longing leaps off the page from the characters, as well as tender or touching scenes that really made me laugh; like when the guys are alll talking about a letter Steve had written to Claire that all the guys had worked on together.I really recommend everyone give this book a try; it's wonderful.
review 2: 4 stars. Really, really good. This book is much more intense than I expect from a Harlequin romance and actually has relatively little straight up romance in it, but it was a very emotional story of how the survivors cope with the loss of fallen soldiers and was very well done. Gotta admit I was as enamored of the dead husband as I was of the hero before it was all over. The book is part of a series but stands alone. I'm off to read the first two now. Updated to say I just read Dear Author's review and completely agree with it, from her quotation of my favorite scene to her making fun of the cover, which really is pretty awful. less

The next time someone tells me that romance is "trashy" I will buy them a copy of this book.
