review 1: This book is a little hard to rate only because the first say 6-7 chapters I really enjoyed. It was dark and twisted, lots of actions and was the start of some great world building. Unfortunately, the last 12-13 chapters were so repetitive that I found myself skimming through a lot of the scenes. There was no real building upon their relationship or the plot for that matter. I kinda found that by chapter 7 Vadim was already well in lust/love and Dan was getting there pretty quickly. The moment that all got itself worked out I pretty much checked out of the story. There was too much meet up, sex, leave for a few months, meet up by coincidence, sex, leave again, arrange to meet at the tea house, sneak into a rented room, sex, leave again, etc. Just kept going. There was bare... morely, if any, variation in that tempo. The authors simply failed to keep my attention and the book just didn't seem to have a strong focus in my mind. I could kinda see where it was headed, but from reviews and spoilers I've read about the next two installments I'm just not going to like it. So I'm going to cut my losses and call it a day. Now I'm going to state that I was part of the minority here. The book itself has fantastic ratings by many other reviews. Like I said I just found this repetitive and it wasn't for me. Give it a go and form your own opinion.
review 2: This book...wow.I was introduced to this book very slowly. Through gradual references to a book set in a war, to quotes, to hearing more about the two main characters, Dan and Vadim, to finally hearing the topic/themes of this book. Honestly, I knew I would read it because I could just feel the passion from this person when she talked about this book, but I didn't know if I would really enjoy it or like it. It sounded very different from anything that I normally read, but I knew I would give it a chance, because that is what I do with books. The first few pages introduced me slowly to the author's way of writing, and it wasn't long before I felt comfortable reading that. I really love the fragmented way he writes now. That first day, I read nearly 150 pages, and I didn't look back all week. I can honestly say that I haven't read through a 651 paged book this fast in a LONG time! The story completely consumes you. The story of Dan and Vadim capture you from the beginning, leaving you begging for more, snatching time to read whenever you can. I knew I should have been revising this week, but this book wouldn't allow me that! I love the pace of this book. How the author takes his time to build up from the start of their encounters, to the end. How everything changes so gradually, and how you can see that in each of their encounters. 'I love you' are three words that are said so often these days, and so quickly too. But not for Dan and Vadim. And when the time comes for them to utter those words, there is no doubt that it is the right moment, because they have been working towards that gradually and carefully over the last few years. Everything about that makes sense to me. When you fall in love with someone, you are trusting them with the very core of you, your heart, your soul, your mind and so much more. That is hard enough to do in the best of situations, but for Dan and Vadim, two enemy soldiers, that takes on SO much more meaning. It's simply beautiful when they allow themselves to relax and just be themselves around each other. To know that no matter what they are and who they are, at the very centre of it, they are both just ordinary men in love. There are hurdles they have to overcome to get to that point, and it's never easy in their situation, but they never give up. Before I read the book, we discussed how finding love in a war is such a beautiful thing. This book only strengthened my view on that.I can't wait to read the next part. I know it will not be good for my revision, but I have no choice in that! That's what Dan and Vadim do. They find a place in your mind and stay there, no matter how hard you try to shake them off, because they want their story to be known. I'm scared for them, I know the next step won't be easy. But I'll be there. less
