review 1: Okay...I know this one is penned by Kate DiCamillo - but that in itself is no reason to be an auto four or five stars...while I feel this one is perhaps a second grade read I don't see what the second grader would take away from this one...some of the words would make your average adult stop to look them up and frankly a second grader would just ignore it altogether...I just don't honestly know what one would do with this book...the artwork is cute if that helps...just my opinion
review 2: Leroy's love for his new horse Maybelline is sweet and funny. Leroy's wish to be a cowboy is mixed in with a story of a new pet. Although it is a spin-off of the Mercy Watson books, it can be read without reading that series (although I don't know about Leroy's former life as
... more a thief, so was a little confused when that was brought up). The chapters are short, the plot keeps moving, characters are fun, and black and white illustrations are sprinkled throughout. This is a good choice for Mercy Watson readers wanting more of that type of story, but a little more challenging read. It would also be a good read-aloud chapter book. less
