Capture the Flag
review 1: This story was over the top in totally unbelievable and coincidental events. I know the audience is children and not adults, but most of the kids I know are smart enough to scoff aloud at the dialog and events in this book. The only kid-friendly element I saw were the figure of speech drawings. Kids I know would like those. I see this is a series. Gordon Korman's "On the Run Series" is an example of a kids spy series that works. Even the "Spy X" series by Peter Lerangis offers tighter writing and plotting. I hate to think that this is the best we have to offer kids at the moment.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved that it included snippets of actual history and reinforced how important it is to know it without sounding preachy. The kids were all
... more from different walks of life and backgrounds, but were great friends by the end. I loved loved loved that it made a point to say that the kids would have met sooner if they had just ventured outside their own little bubble at a social event. They only met because they all needed to charge electronics during a snowstorm. Anyway, the kids band together to solve the mystery of who stole the flag that was the inspiration for the "Star Spangled Banner." There are many dangerous situations they found themselves in along with some quite humorous scenarios. It occasionally reminded me of Scooby Doo episodes (in a good way!). I don't want to give away the end, but I will say that the children became bonded for life and made sure to watch out for each other. It was great that even though this was the beginning of a series, it had a definite ending. It didn't leave you with a cliffhanger, just the possibility of further adventures. It can clearly be read with a satisfying ending. less
