review 1: Third-grader Marty McGuire is not a princessy sort of girl, so when her teacher casts her as the lead in The Frog Prince, she's understandably miffed. She doesn't want to twirl around the stage in a poofy dress. But when she blends her love of amphibians with her role in the play, Marty just might be able to come up with a solution that satisfies everyone.Overall, I liked this. Marty is realistic and thinks like a kid, even if her tomboyishness is heavyhanded - did you get that? That she doesn't like typical girl things? The message of the book is a good one - it's okay to be a girl who likes frogs and playing in the dirt AND it's okay to be a girl who likes flouncy foo-foo princess stuff - but that message came a little late for my liking. I was a little girl who co... moreuld be rough and tumble in the backyard with my brothers one minute and prissily playing Barbies the next, so I would have liked it better if Marty were at least tolerant of Annie liking girly-girl things as well as tomboy things from the start. Also, this is a book discussion title at my public library, and it is not great for a book club - there's not much to discuss and there aren't many activities you can do to tie into it. It would be better to tie into a school curriculum unit - a science one about amphibians would be ideal.
review 2: Great chapter book for young readers who are ready for chapter. Marty is a determined young girl who knows what she wants and fights for what she believes in.
