review 1: Through the letters, you will learn why Katherine made the decisions that she did with her family. This book will make you think about your relationships with your family. All of the characters become as alive as each page is turned. It was almost like I was there on the Prairie right there with them. Kathleen told how hard it was to live life in the 1800's. I really liked this book and think that you will too!
review 2: I'm finished with The Last Letter: I really liked this book by the end, and the secret really surprised me. There were some moments when I felt irritated by the main character's frequent thoughts about her lazy, dreamer husband, and I felt they could have been reduced. That is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. Other times, I could not wait to s
... moreee what happened next. It really gave me insight as to what life as a homesteader on the prairie in 1887 was like, especially for an upper class woman who was used to great comforts, and had lost her old life. She went from living in a large house with servants to a dugout with dirt walls, floor and ceiling, in which she cooked, sewed and killed two rattlesnakes, while pregnant and raising 3 children. I could never have adapted as she did. There were also exciting times in the story, as they faced catastrophic events of nature, as well as the personal tragedies for their family and close neighbors. The story jumps forward at times to 1906, where the main character faces death, and her grown, once adoring, daughter, now a wife and mother, struggles with her anger and hatred toward her mother for reasons that won't be revealed until the end. less
