Reaction:
To be perfectly honest, this book was one of the ones I picked on a whim because I wanted something new to read. While reading other reviews of this story I hadn’t expected much given the various ratings it received. I read it through my Amazon Prime account, which allowed me to read it for free. Free books are very nice when you’re a college student. I was pleasantly surprised and instantly intrigued by Kai and her brother Reev. Their relationship was an interesting one. Kai didn’t remember anything from before she was 8 and Reev had raised her since then, being only 16 himself. Avan was also a strong character that caught my attention. His story being almost as heartbreaking as Kai not being able to remember where she came from.
Lee’s world building and character development was strong however. I felt immersed in the world that Kai and the other lived in. Descriptions of the world and different areas within were captivating. My favorite character, Mason, does not appear in the story until well into it, but he is hilarious as well as mysterious. His friendship with Kai borders on being more which reminds me of one of my friendships I have in my life.
While the writing was difficult to get through at some points in the story, especially when it revolved around Kai and Avan’s relationship. She was starting to get on my nerves with her constant reminder that she was trying to help her brother and nothing else mattered in the world.
