review 1: There were two parallel stories and that kept the book both interesting and confusing. The reason I gave this 3 stars and not 4 was the way it ended. I wanted to know the full story about John Osvald and what the grandson was doing in Scotland. I wanted to know more about Inspector MacDonald's injuries. On the second case involving Halders and Aneta there are so many unanswered questions I found myself looking to see if pages were missing from my book.
review 2: Not the greatest of the Northern mystery writers (he's not Indridason or Mankell) but this is a very slow philosophical mystery and Edwardson wasn't really able to really resolve both strands of the novel and left me feeling less than satisfied - neither of the resolutions really worked and while I like
... more mysteries that don't necessarily wrap up neatly, this seemed like it had just been beyond Edwardson's control and he wanted to just get to the end and it showed. I think my problem is also that I think of Winters as a modern Swedish version of Peter Wimsey (this is how Edwardson portrays him - debonair, likes exspensive scotch and Saville Row clothes and fine dining) and I haven't a lot of sympathy for him as a character! less

I thought it was way too unlikely that police would have the time or resources to pursue these cases

Enjoyed his other books much more. This was very disjointed.
