review 1: An interesting read. The strongest emotion I felt in this book was sorrow. In the middle, it was a bit heart-breaking, seeing what Ari and the others were put through and that is about it. I am not sure if it was intentional or not, but not many emotions were as strongly conveyed--like the love between Ari and Sebastian (I think the author tried to justify the fast hook up of Ari and Sebastian in book 1 here, however, I feel that she should have explored a bit more), her need to protect (yea, it was there but it felt like a sort of underlying emotion) and her need for vengeance (I just couldn't grasp it, like she didn't exactly desire it). The curious cat in me would like to see where this leads.
review 2: Ari’s difficulties get worse. It’s not because her
... moreopponents have changed (it’s tough to see how you can top a vicious goddess as an enemy) but because she’s gone back—to school. Yikes!Levity aside, the protagonist now has to struggle with schooling, fighting techniques, connecting with her power and coming to grips with it. The ever-looming threat of her becoming a monster that can kill with a look weighs heavily on the heroine. But the author smartly keeps her from brooding too much; there are other concerns and interests to keep the reader riveted. The interesting tidbits about ancient gods, spells, battles, etc., add an engrossing layer to the story itself. The other characters, however, suffer a little as being mainly adjuncts to Ari’s story but they manage to hold their own in the few scenes where they make their appearance. This is a good follow-up to the first book and keeps the reader interested enough to see the conclusion to this series. less
