Uncanny X-Men Vol. 2
review 1: Gillen and Pacheco start the post-Schism Uncanny X-Men off well. The mission statement is laid out - show strength while saving lives. There's plenty of strong characterization for most of the characters, showing a nice range of personalities. There's a lot of tension on the team and in the book, as this is a very aggressive, and very villain-heavy, group. Since this is written by Kieron Gillen, there's still plenty of humour. The best of it comes from Sinister. Gillen writes the absolute best version of Sinister ever. He's charmingly evil, and wickedly funny. Pacheco's art is really strong, and captures the action and drama equally well. This is a very good book.
review 2: Contained here is a short and sweet Sinister-centric story, followed by an even shorter e
... morexperimental one-off issue between story arcs. Gillen captures the voices of the X-Men fairly well, maintaining a fast pace, and comfortable flow of dialogue in what is otherwise a fairly complicated story. New readers might be lost on some of the finer details, but the basics are explained well, without heavy-handed exposition. No new genius characterization is accomplished here, but Gillen seems to be becoming comfortable with the X-Men family, and I'm excited to see him stretch his legs a bit more in future volumes. The art is effective and generally pleasing, adding to a book that was at the very least worth a peek. less
