review 1: Major dud. I couldn't finish this book. The plot should have been interesting, but somehow wasn't. The heroine was incredibly self-centered and a total bore. When I finally gave up on this book, she was plotting to go loot some Cambodian antiquities with no qualms whatsoever. Probably an accurate attitude for the time portrayed (1920s), but it just made the main character that much more unlikeable.
review 2: Irene Blum was a curator of the Khmer Cambodian collection of the Brooke museum in Seattle. The time is just post WWI and when an expected promotion does not come through, she quits and heads to Singapore on a mission for her friend and patron for whom she has acquired many items for his oriental collection. Her intention is to get to Cambodia and tra
... moreck down some copper scrolls purportedly containing the history of the rise and fall of the Khmer culture. After meeting with a woman suggested by her patron and a number of dangerous actions she and Simone head to Hong Kong and on to Saigon before heading for Cambodia by car with two men, Simone’s old love and what turns out to be the son on Irene’s patron. There are more trials along the way and then a long trek through the jungles to find the lost temple and the scrolls. The four people all have different agendas and reasons for finding the scrolls which complicate the search even more than the trek through the jungle. That’s the gist of the book, not a bad read but I had to put myself in the era and not thinking about the recent history of the areas traveled through. less

This is a very good read about Cambodian History. Irene could be a female 'Indiana Jones'.

A slow, but intriguing, archaeological search.
