review 1: I made it about half way into this, and it's unfortunately too far outside my age-group. It was recommended to me as a YA-Fantasy type, but it was in the Children's section of the library. I thought lots of the situations were YA-like in danger-level; although the heroine is just-turned 13, the way the story is, it come across in that for-kids way. The heroine always has a convenient out for the danger or someone helping her. We don't get many solutions directly committed by the main character, it made her role weak. She, and the family she grew up in, are so purposefully grotesque and it came across fake.
review 2: Kit Grindstaff creates a creepy, visceral world in which our relatable heroine, Jemma, can shine. Although ostensibly for middle graders, this book
... more kept this adult reader hooked. One caveat: this is not a book for sensitive children, who will be drawn to it because of the adorable golden rats, Noodle and Pie. There is blood, guts, violence, and evil a-plenty in these pages, so be forewarned. For those who aren't cowed by such content, this will be a memorable read. Grindstaff knows how to tell a gripping tale and has the writing chops to do so. less
