review 1: Well I'll give the next book a shot since the person who recommended this series to me really liked it, but so far my favorite part of this book is that the heads of both organizations get what's coming to them. Otherwise, I couldn't connect with the villains' motivations enough to get invested in the story, and the "heroes" of this story were so past grey that it was just painful to read their moralizing on the villainy of their opponents. I did like Faye.
review 2: I started this book with a bit of skepticism - I'd tried to read "Monster Hunter International" by th author and just didn't like it - too predictable and just not interesting. I'm glad I stuck with "Hard Magic" - it was completely different for me and I loved it! There were elements of the magic s... moreystem in this book reminded me a bit of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn books, but in no way was it a slavish imitation. "Hard Magic" had its own unique plot and characters, all of whom I cared about. That makes a great book for me. I also liked the setting of an alternate early-mid 20th century North America with a lot of real historical figures. less
