review 1: I am, admittedly, kind of dumb sometimes. Like when I find a series of books that is "eh, okay enough", and then keep reading them even though I have better things to do. So imagine my surprise when this one turned out to be pretty good! The first few Monster Hunter books are the kind of testosterone fueled wet-dream of every boring dude with a normal life who secretly wishes they were a gun nut and survivalist out there. They were action-y and punch-y and generally FUN, if lacking in substance. They were also aggressively dumb. Nemesis does absolutely nothing to change this model except bring a level of self awareness to the table that hasn't been seen before, and it's honestly pretty neat. Also, getting to see the other side of the story (the government team versus th... moree private corporation of the first few books) is super cool. The way they treat the MHI guys is especially amusing, since the basic line is "yeah, they're good in a fight, but they're a bunch of assholes", and the whole thing really makes you wonder about some of the minor characters who were originally painted as jerks, but might have their own side to the story.Anyway. I can't really recommend reading the series for just this one. But if you read one or two of them, thought they were fine, but weren't too motivated... well, maybe try some more? I dunno. Your call.
review 2: An easy 5 stars! Quite possibly my favorite entry in a terrific series. This book like the third in the series focuses on one of the peripheral characters, this time it's agent Franks. Regular readers of the series are familiar with these characters already and are treated to a very creative treatment of Franks' origin which with some creative embellishment by Larry Correia is pulled -loosely- from actual historical events. We've read in past novels about Franks' association with the founding fathers, castle frankenstein and Conrad Dippel and we've heard him referred to as "the fallen". Now these stories are realized vividly and with a great deal of humor. It is reavealed that - Big Spoiler - Franks was in fact one of the fallen that God cast out of Heaven with Lucifer. He was able to inhabit a body and with the help of his maker and the elixir of life he rids the earth of the unnatural. One of the many things I appreciated about this book was how Larry Correia was able to focus on the story of Franks yet seamlessly allow almost every character we have gotten to know over the previous four books to make an appearance in this story. Owen Pitt is typically the focus of the stories and I laughed out loud a few times when he was involved.Towards the end of the story you see that the mostly one-dimensional agent Franks may actually have a shot at redemption.Really solid and really creative with bad guys you just cant wait to see get clobbered. Really looking forward to the next book. less
