review 1: ......and we don't rent pigs." a line from an absolute treasure, Lonesome Dove. Larry McMurtry's cowboy dialog is like excruciatingly wonderful food, it is to be savored and the experience made to linger as long as can be drawn out. I have devoured all of his westerns although I am not a fan of the genre at all. Rhino Ranch was my first book of his otherwise. I could never bring myself to watch the movie or read the book, the Last Picture Show because all I could see was Cybil Shepherd telling me not to hate her because she was beautiful....(I could find other compelling reasons to do so). So I was not familiar with Duane or any of the other characters in the story. Maybe their characters were already played out before I got to them, or like one reviewer wrote, McMurtry p... morehoned this novel in. These people were faded, watered down, stepped on.. Whatever, this was really BORING and like a treadmill, a lot of work without getting anywhere. McMurtry kept setting up his characters for something interesting to happen and then lost interest...? I thought this book would never get started nor ever end. No matter. Mr McMurtry has given me dozens of endlessly fascinating characters and told me the best stories that continue to entertain and move me over and over again. I can get over this.
review 2: I started reading this series with book 2 (Texasville) about ten years ago. I wonder if author meant this to end up a tetralogy, or if he just loved Duane Moore, his family, and the people of Thalia as much as his readers do that he just had to give them one last story. I'd suggest starting from the beginning (book 1, The Last Picture Show or 2, Texasville could be read as stand alone books, 3 and 4 I thought really needed the background to invest as much in the characters). less

Not my favorite Larry McMurtry, but I got through it. Not much to the story.
