review 1: Good Grief! So McMurtry wants to "deconstruct the West" does he? And at the same time he disavows any connection his effort might have to the truth of who the characters are or what they did? (His characters, most of whom were historical folk, are "afloat in time" remember) So what do we have in The Last Kind Words Saloon? A pretentious laugh at the reading public's expense who slough through this boring tome in hopes of a real story or a plea from the author not to bother him anymore with this writing stuff?
review 2: Brief look at Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and other Old West figures emphasizing the women in the vicinity. A British Lord starts building a castle but dies in a hunting accident. There's an exotic madam who shouldn't fit in but somehow does, a t
... moreeacher, a bartender, and a female reporter who adores Bill Cody. There's also a big stampede, a sand storm, and of course, the O.K. Corral. Wyatt is rough and mean and cheats on his wife, but she's with him until old age. Terse, hard, yet colorful, the writing shines but the story never moved me. less

No. Just. No. Did McMurtry need money in a hurry? This book makes no sense.
