review 1: I have read and enjoyed books by Guhrke before. I was ready to love this one. I did not read the other two in the series and only picked this one because of a recommendation.I personally was very disappointed.Christina should have been a very interesting character. Unfortunately, we don't really get to learn much about her, not in any real sense. She never grows or learns anything new about herself.Christian was likable but again, other than the superficial, I never really felt like I understood him or knew him. There just was no real depth to these guys.I did not find the marriage about ship to be credible. I know that for a time, wealthy women, in America, were able to basically use their wealth to marry their way into the English aristocracy. However, the whole marriage... more aboard ship, marriage publicly ruined by another member of the aristocracy, etc was really too much to accept it requires that I suspend belief far beyond what I like to do. I enjoy romance novels but I need them make sense. I wish that this one did. This first act, then is compounded by two other events just made this book unfinishable. I was on page 367 when I gave up but honestly, I should hvae stopped reading long before then. I don't believe a woman with any aspirations to give her sisters respectability and an opportunity to be accepted into historic, aristocratic British society would have intentionally made a spectical of herself as Christiana does at the end of the novel. I also don't believe that she would have made the choice to do what she did for other reason also. This was, for me, disappointing and beyond lackluster. It feels like just a number of storylines from different romance novels all condensed poorly into one book. By the end, I could not care less about the characters.
review 2: Something was missing in this book. It was a very good story, but I feel like Guhrke didn't take the time to develop Christian's character more. I felt like there was a lot of thinking on Annabels part and not enough of who Christian really is to the core. I didn't like the ending very much, it was sped up really fast like there was not much thought put into it. I'll definitely read more of her books, but this one wasn't my favorite. less
