review 1: I literally said "woah" when I finished this book. Good, good sci-fi/almost cyberpunk, a credible the-future-next-Sunday dystopia. Worth a reread, or maybe is just wish it was longer, or more books were set in the same universe. (Maybe the MaddAdam just spoiled me on that fully-explored future front). I didn't realize until I went to write this that the author was the same as The Shining Girls, but it makes sense -- some of the same "there's certainly social commentary there, but not as deep as I'd like" combined with characters you almost but don't quite get. Max Barry, but with more realized female characters and less concise writing.
review 2: This book sounded a lot more interesting in the cover blurb than it ended up being, and while I think the author had
... more some interesting ideas (the Aitos, people's dependence on phones, etc.), the impression I was left with was that they would have been more satisfyingly explored in a short story. That's not something I say often, but in this case, the characters were just not strong enough to support a whole novel. I persisted through it hoping that at some point they would become sympathetic, but it never happened. less
